Drawstring lamp is a textile lamp made from a sunshielding waste material. The lamp is produced locally in Göteborg, Sweden at Returhuset in a small scale line production. At the moment we make them in two sizes, small, 30 cm diameter and medium, 45 cm diameter. The medium size comes as a pendant and the small size comes both as a pendant and as a standing table lamp. The table lamp is 50 cm high.
All the materials in the lamps are reused or recycled. The fabric in Drawstring Lamp is made by Svensson Markspelle, originally used as a sun screen which filters the light beautifully and therefore is well suited for lighting products. Additionally the textile has a structure that allows it to be self-supporting in an organic yet symmetrical way. The legs in the table lamp comes from bicycle spokes and the wood is scraps from a carpenters workshop.
This has been a starting point in our design process and a very inspiring way to work. We also work closely with the makers of the products, Returhuset; they are craft teachers and people who have been long term unemployed and are training to work. It has therefore been important to create products that fit varying skills and levels of expertise.
As we wanted to make an outstanding design with crafted and unique details we sought ourselves to
Göteborg’s Belt Factory, to design fabric cords that complement the lamp shade. The textile cables have a three coluored dotted pattern reminiscent of the classic textile cable but more three dimensional in its look. The wooden parts that hold the lamp together both work as a constructional component, decoration and as a practical feature if you want to shorten the cable.
